View Full Version : lowering a truck.... alot....
getting some extra cash laying around. wanna basically lower the dodge... i bought it with this in mind...
searched around the internet... and everyone with a dodge ram 1500 is a pussy and only goes with a 2/4 drop. basically looking how it did before, especially after these ppl put 22s or 24s on them making it back to stock height...
i say fuck that shit... i want a 5/7 drop or a 5/8 custom drop. did a little research and most people recommended me to this site.
http://www.slammed1.com
thinking the 5/7 drop should be fine.
itll sit like the last truck in this page:
http://www.slammed1.com/gallery4.html
except itll be on stock 17 inch wheels... this is where i have my question....
would it be easier/more appropriate to buy the wheels and tires first and drop it based on the height of the wheels or should i just drop the truck first and then measure the backspacing and height that i would need for a good wheel and tire combo?
anyone have any experience with this? how much of the truck geometry changed when you dropped your truck that drastically?
this is the part list for the 5/7 drop:
# 5/7 Drop
frt coils, frt spindles, rear flip kit,c-notch,custom shackles full set of correct shocks (longer shipping time applies) still aligns and rides great (30" tires or less and specific wheel offsets, and widths required) MUST email or call to verify applications and specs.
---1125.00 shipped
yeah thats alot of cash to spend but im sure i can lurk the internet and find that shit a little cheaper here and there.
the drop spindles seem like the most important parts needed to keep the ride as smooth as possible.
also, according to the site most of the parts are made from Mcgaughys drop parts and accessories. ive never really heard of them but then again i dont know to many people with modified truck suspension.
oh and also everything will be installed by my friend and i (even cutting the c-notch)
any input, comments will be appreciated. hopefully i can have this thing done as soon as possible.

you will need to do a c-notch if you want to tuck the rears. I say you go with an airbag setup so you can adjust your height.
It does scare the shit out of you if you pop a bag.
yeah fuck that im not doing bags. i never liked them. never will. and IVE NEVER EVER EVER EVER seen someone have an airbag setup for more then 2 years. theyre fucking unreliable and the pop like whoa. no thanks. id rather just drop that shit and never look at the suspension again in my life....

The 5/7 drop looks the best, 5/8 looks like the back is sagging to far.

You're gonna be scraping ur shit everywhere...specially in this city and these roads with construction.
I know quite a bit about truckn from a friend that had a 98 Dakota and slammed it on airbags. He had the individual fast bags, c-notch then wanted to do an engine swap and ran into problems and never finished it. Car got repoed after not paying.

wow... theres plenty of air suspension set up that are reliable and ride good as hell giving you the slammed look and the comfortable ride height right when you need it. most air bags used are firestone air bags which are used in firetrucks ambulances and those big rigs that haul our goods acroos the us with millions of miles on them always being reliable.
plus if you are so scared of popping a bag you can still use a airbag/shock set up and it will in turn allow you some more performace. then if you somehow find a way to manage to pop a bag without sabotaging it you can still rely on the shock to keep you from bottoming out
the good thing about adjustable air suspension is that you can adjust to road condition, height of wheels, and ride height at the flick of a switch
that whole taboo of airbags being unreliable and popping is really bullshit if you use quality parts.
i've seen plenty firestone airbags used on trucks that haul up to 80,000 lbs last long over half a million miles.. if you use crap parts you get a crap unreliable system.
a truck with a quality lowered air suspension rides just so much nicer than a truck with lowered spring and shock suspension. if you llower it with springs and changing knuckles you are going to be married to it.
you dont like how it rides at a certain hegiht with air....adjust it from the inside of your comfortable ass truck..
just my useless opnion. good luck
I have never seen an air bag pop, I've heard of lines coming off from those that use the inferior lines and clamps, If you use the DOT certified kits you'll more than likely have several yeras without issue. There is a reason they are DOT certified, because they will actually hold the air.
ive also heard that u can use those steel brake lines also. which also looks pretty cool. but i dont know man i still really dont want to bag the truck

it is a lot of work and extra costs, but yeah i can see your reluctance to do it. I wanted to do it to the S-10 but I didn't want to put that kind of cash into a truck that I wouldn't be keeping for too long.

I use to have a ranger on a 4/5 kit tuckin 20's i loved my setup rear is easy flip kit and blocks. and the front was lower and upper control arms w/ springs. i loved the ride it was way better then air bags. the real reasson why i did it was because i didn't want to do all the cutting and welding for the c-nocth. running all the lines and crap i'm a big fan of keeping it clean.
+2 airbags FTL:runbarf:

Do you have any idea what it takes to drop a truck that low.. how much cuttng you need to do in the engine bay and the bed! That where you see the diffrence between a sport tuck and a lowrider...

i cant see because of work but yeah if your gonna tuck the shit out of those wheels u gotta cut the bed in the back and the inner fenders and leave ur tires all exposed and shit. i never liked that about those trucks. although some of them look hot as fuck but thats not something im looking to do. i drive this truck every day to work and when i go out we usually go in my truck because i can seat up to 8 people in that bitch.

just causeyou have an air suspension it doesntmean you have to go to that extreme. you can bag it without cutting and notching .. it just wont be to that extreme. you can still lower it to the lowered stance you are trying to accomplish but still be able to adjustit to the road conditions (miramars manholes) there is bolton kits, you just need to know where to find em.
when you install springs and a lowering kit you are commited to that. air suspension can adjust to the ride and load. if you put a bike or some heavy ass furniture in the back its going to not be as fun as if you load up all the same shit and can simply aadjust the suspensions load by the flick of a switch hence makign the ride so much better.
but to each its own..
