INDIANAPOLIS — Japanese automaker Toyota confirmed Thursday it will cease its participation in the IRL IndyCar Series.
The changes were especially relevant in Indianapolis, site of the IRL's flagship event, the Indianapolis 500, and F1's U.S. Grand Prix.
Toyota's departure, reported earlier by Inside Line but not officially confirmed until today, will coincide with the end of General Motors' competition in the IRL with a Chevrolet-branded V8. Honda, the dominant power plant the past two years in the IndyCar Series, will be the sole engine supplier in 2006.

I'm sure it's an economic decision, not simply because they "can't hang". Honda was dominating CART for years before they just up and quit that series because there was no financial justification for the expendeture.

That could be part of it, or their possiblity into the Nextel Cup. But it seems that they seem to get their asses kicked quite often. Remember how long it took them to get a win in CART??? It was like a sudden miracle when they won their first pole, and on top of that they were actually paying teams to run their engines when they actually started becoming competitive. But w/e the past is the past.
Now they have to compete with the likes of BMW, Cosworth, Honda, Renault, etc.
