Eric,

just wanted to run this by you to see what you think.

i own a gateway 3522gz laptop. ive had it now for about 3 yrs and within the past 3 weeks, have been having some issues with it. since february, it has crashed about 8 times. the majority of the times it is due to it randomly being able to not find the system directory and thus not being able to boot windows.

i started to suspect a faulty HDD so i ran the chkdsk utility and did determine that there are bad sectors on the drive. would the bad sectors explain why within a week fo me re-installing windows, the damn thing crashes again? also, if thats the case, would it be worth it to just buy a replacement drive or just sell the computer and buy a new one?

shoot me a PM whenever man, thanks for the help!

The majority of the time that a pc crashes and it has bad sectors is a warning that the hard drive is slowly dieing.

It is best if you back up all your information before the point of no return. I would also just buy a new hard drive as in todays market they are relatively cheap.Replace with a new one.

and Yes bad sectors will cause a drive to stall and crash and may at times require the operating system to be reinstalled.

i figured. i got it working more or less now. im noticing though that sometimes it takes ungodly amounts of time for the computer to access the HD from time to time.

any sites/places you'd recommend to get a new HD?

thanks again man

i spoke with compusa they said the 24th is their Grand Re-Opening in the Dadeland Store and prices will be bumped.

Try buy.com or pricewatch.com
