Putting a gun under my name ?

I have a gun which is under my moms name that I plan on selling. I don't know what the laws are but I bet I can't sell something that does not belong to me. How would I go by changing the names of the weapon ? Also, to those who have bought from a private party, how did you go by checking to make sure the gun wasn't stolen etc ? Any help would be great since I already have someone interested in the gun.

Guns can be sold from private party to private party with just a reciept and signatures. The date on the reciept makes the new owner not responsible for anything that happened with the gun prior to that date (if anything should come up later). You are NOT required to register the gun with the police but you can do that if you like. Registering the gun will tell you if its stolen or not. I think you can take the gun to the police station and have them run the serial numbers too just to check also. Tech you can sell your moms gun with a reciept from yourself to the new party. As long as its not stolen you should be str8.
