someone that really knows their shit please help me out.
ever since i got my linksys wireless router (WRT54G) i've tried to ftp files to my other pc's or xbox they're going a hell of a lot slower.
Before i would get a steady 8-9mb/s but now days i'm lucky to hit 1mb...
any help is appreciated
Is this over the wirelss network?
Or
Over the hardwired connections?

Hey buddy, how's it going... let's see if we can narrow it down a bit.
1. What do you mean FTP files to your PC? Is your FTP root shared off your home pc and you are accessing it via the web from work or internally at home on the LAN?
2. If internally, your obviously bypassing the WEB and connecting to the FTP site through the local network, is this being done over the WIRELESS network or are you hard wired?
3. Is the computer hosting the FTP site connected via the WiFi?
<----- questions 1-3 might be my misunderstanding, from reading your post, I am assuming you have an FTP site at home that you access. If it is an FTP site on the web then disregard these queations on move on to below ---------------------------->
4. try running a speed test from "dslreports.com"-> tools-> speed test , and choose any of the site (I like speak easy and megapath)
Reasons for these questions is to narrow down what is actually causing the deficiency in speed. Usually wireless networks can transmit faster than let's say a DSL connection downstream so that should not be the culprint. ( I am assuming you are on CABLE internet because of the speed you mentioned). If you are on cable and there is an influx in subscribers around you, and they are all online, it can slow your speed down. Try checking it at like 3 am when noone is on.
I hope we can find the problem, if not you are going to have to buy some beers and invite me and Mike to come up there and look at your setup ( I hope it is not being held up by duct tape and bubble gum. :x: LOL!)
later dude

the router is a wireless router, but the xbox is physically connected to the router with the wire, and the pc which i am ftping from is also the base for the router so it is also wired directly into the router.
the entire path has no wireless connectivity, i just mentioned that i switched to a wireless router from my previous wired router.

sounds to me that the wireless router has nothing to do with it, but if you suspect it then switch back to the old router and see what happens. It can be anything really, bad cable, nic card going bad.... etc.
you going to Towers tomorrow?

Try going with an A/G router, since it's meant specifically for what you're doing. It should make a difference.
